Country Decorating Style in a Farmhouse Family Room

I don’t know about you, but I’ve been a fan of the country decorating style for many, many years. Country Living magazine is my absolute favorite and I love country decorating books as well. Country style fits a variety of genres … farmhouse, shabby, eclectic, somewhat traditional, and it can even be a little bit modern and fresh. Country decorating style feels earthy and organic to me, providing a simplicity in life that balances a busy lifestyle. Today I’m sharing country decor in my family room.

My family room is primarily washed in neutrals with touches of country blue. Lots of sunlight floods the room which keeps it light and bright. I’m a huge fan of natural light so a house with lots of big windows is important to me. I’ve added a large center clock that was painted and distressed to give it a country appearance.

Country decorating style in the family room includes the use of slipcovers and lots of pillows. A simple basket on the corner cupboard and textured balls in a wooden bowl on the chest add a bit of earthiness to the bright room.

Painted and distressed furniture is a staple in country decorating. I’ve used Pure White and Louis Blue on the painted pieces in this room – both are Annie Sloan Chalk Paint colors.  The armoire in the corner was painted and decoupaged, while the blanket chest was painted Duck Egg Blue before covering it with white. When distressing, the underneath paint shows through giving an aged appearance.

Using collectibles throughout your home is a staple of country decorating style. I collect white ironstone, old books, and vintage mirrors. For bigger visual impact, group collections together as opposed to spreading them apart.

Textiles are also important to creating country decorating style. Whether you choose lace or nubby wool, texture adds a layer of depth to any country room. I chose landscape burlap for the window swags in my family room. No sewing needed! I simply cut the fabric to length and knotted it at the ends. And the curtain rods? They’re branches I found out in the yard. 

Finally, the floor in my farmhouse family room wears a bamboo script mat. It holds up to a busy lifestyle and furry friends. Since country decorating is meant to add simplicity to your life, it’s important to choose items that are low-maintenance and can take a beating. After all, we distress the painted furniture to look like it’s held up to some wear and tear!  Living with the country decorating style is easy and stress free … so I’ll always be a fan!  What decorating styles do you like best?
