Painting a Claw Foot Tub

Painting a Claw Foot Tub

One of the things that sold me on my old farmhouse was the downstairs claw foot tub. I have always wanted an old, romantic tub to soak in and to my surprise when touring my house for the first time … there was another claw foot tub in the upstairs bathroom. The downstairs tub was in good shape but needed a facelift. It had that 80’s faux pas marble finish to it and doesn’t fit with my lighter decor. I realized my future included painting a claw foot tub – and I’m glad I did it.  Here’s what the tub looks like with its new paint job:

Painted Claw Foot TubI used Annie Sloan Chalk Paint to paint the outside of the tub in Old White. Luckily it only needed one coat of paint. The inside of the claw foot tub was painted using tub and sink paint.

Painting a claw foot tubI wanted a bit of a French look so printed a fleur-de-lis on my computer and cut it out. I then taped it onto the tub and traced it very lightly with a pencil. Using Paris Grey Annie Sloan Chalk Paint, I painted it by hand using a small artist’s brush.

Fleur de lis painted on a claw foot tubTo get the stripes even, I taped them off with frog tape. I rubbed the tape firmly onto the tub so that no paint would leak through. Once the stripes had dried slightly but not completely, I carefully peeled off the frog tape.

Bubble bath in a painted claw foot tubI added a small shelf above the tub to hold candles, flowers, or anything else that might be needed. A piece of wood becomes a make-shift shelf for a book if you want to linger and relax for a while.

Painting a claw foot tub with Annie Sloan Chalk PaintPainting a claw foot tub isn’t hard to do. I’m happy with the way it turned out. The before was too dark and had the 80’s style of faux painting on it. I felt just a little bad covering it with white paint … but not too bad, because I love my French looking tub!

Here’s the “Before.”

  5. I adore your amazing tub and beautiful bathroom. You did an OUTSTANDING job and your claw foot tub is by far my favorite tub that I have ever laid eyes on. WOW>> I have seen this all over the internet and on Pinterest. I have used AS paint for a couple of years and now I am in search of a tub to paint and use outside, as it wont fit into my tiny 8′ x 24′ tiny house. Thanks for such an inspiring post. Your bathroom is amazing and I could soak there for hrs. The only thing missing from that bath board is a glass of wine. Ohhh…. I am day dreaming.

  6. Oh how I love your transformation! I too have recoated my iron/porcelain claw foot tub. I purchased what I was told was a very good quality kit (by a plumber?). Moved the tub to a summer porch and followed directions to the letter, including the cure times between coats, storing the paint in the freezer between coats…. (Showers in the basement for two weeks until the reinstall, ugh.)
The finish was lovely for nearly 3 months before it began to form a tiny bubble here or there. Now, three disheartened years later it is a peeled eyesore. I don’t know what I could have done wrong. A call to the kit manufacturer of course blamed me as a first-time user. Whatever would make them think I would try their product again?
I am wondering what product you used for your tub re-coat, if you would kindly share please?
