Re-Purposed Fire Pit Stand

Re-Purposed Fire Pit Stand

Tucked away in our back yard, I’ve been hiding this:

 fire pit stand

It’s an old fire pit stand.  The fire bowl used to sit on top of it until we wore a hole right through it.

My husband was all set to throw it out to the curb but I just couldn’t do it.

The little legs were so cute, surely I could find some use for the little stand!

It took me awhile — say, 5 years or so — but I have re-purposed the fire pit stand in to a cute little outdoor coffee table.

 Better late than never!

It’s not perfect, but I love it anyway.

It took just a couple of hours to make — it’s really simple!

Tutorial

Materials:

  • 1 x 4’s cut to length (mine are 32″)
  • 1 x 2 stringer boards (I used 2)
  • Jig saw
  • galvanized wood screws
  • outdoor stain

stringing boards together

Directions:

  1. String boards together (I used 6)
  2. join using a 1 x 2 stringer board and some galvanized wood screws.  Be careful to use screws that are short enough so they go through both pieces of wood but not all the way through to the other side.
  3. Cut the stringer boards long enough so they join all the boards, yet short enough so you can still use the jig saw to cut your circle without having to go through 2 layers of boards.
  4. Draw a circle the size you want your table top to be.  (I did this using a pencil with a string tied to it.  I held the string at the middle of the joined board and then drew a circle just like using a compass in math class.)
  5. Cut your circle with a jig saw.
  6. Sand and smooth top and edges.
  7. Stain as desired.

My boards warped a little because I didn’t stain it right away but I still like it.  It gives my porch a little bit of the farmhouse feel that I love so much.

And, it’ super practical.  We put our feet up on it and serve drinks and food on it.

It’s a great addition to our back porch.

  1. Great recycle project. So cute!!

  2. Great idea! I was just thinking to do this the other day when I was looking at my rusted and broken firepit!! Thank you for the idea. 😉

  3. Love this project Julie! Sometimes it takes awhile until we figure out “what” we want to do with those things we want to make over! But your outdoor table project was worth the wait! So pretty!

  4. Hi…I have the same stand that I’ve been trying to figure out how to reuse for at least two years! I do have a question…how did you attach the top to the legs? Thanks so much!
