scaredy cat: a pet story

scaredy cat: a pet story

I thought National Pet Month would be a great time to introduce you to our cat.  Meet Blackie, the gray tabby.

Free to a good home.  KIDDING.  Just kidding.  We LOVE our cat.

He was a Christmas present to our daughter about seven years ago.  We let her choose the name.  Blackie was better than Eric, in our opinion.  We suggested, Smokey or Gray, but she wouldn’t hear of it.

They have been bosom buddies since the beginning.  If Hannah is home, Blackie is right there with her.

To this day, he will only kiss her.  She’ll put her face up to his and he will lick her nose.  It never fails that when we try that, we might get a sniff, but usually he runs the other way.  Heartbreaker!

Blackie has been a slow-to-warm-up kind of cat.

We don’t know much about his background, except that he’d been rescued and just recovered from a broken leg when we got him.  There have been so many times when he’ll act skittish around us, and my husband and I will wonder out loud, “Blackie why don’t you trust us? We love you.  We take good care of you.  You have no reason to still be afraid.”

And every time that has happened, I hear this still, small voice inside that asks me the same question, “Why don’t you trust me? I have only loved you, cared for you and provided for you.”    Life’s lessons come from the most unexpected places.

It’s only been in recent years that he’ll snuggle up next to us on the couch or in bed.  We can get away with picking him up now, if only for a short while.  One way that he shows his affection for us is by leaving us his latest kill, ie. a pony tail holder, a toy mouse, a rubberband.  He’s so brave.

I never would have thought that I’d love him as much as I do.  But, I do.  Having a pet is one of life’s little treasures.

    • I agree…we get a real kick out of watching Blackie. It’s easy to see where some expressions come from like “9 lives” “scaredy cat”…He lives up to the stereotypes.

  3. Blackie is beautiful. What a blessing he has been in your daughter’s life.
I learn the most amazing God lessons from our pets!
