the key to staying organized

the key to staying organized

My eyes were shooting darts across the room at someone whom shall remain nameless, as I thought to myself,  ” I do all the work around here!”

But my self-righteous attitude was brought down to reality by a small, quiet whisper from within.  And the truth stung a little bit.

I barely keep my head above water, often letting things go around the house: things like laundry, dinner and cleaning.

People start to notice when there’s no clean underwear, or we have “rummage night” for dinner more often than not.

But, I don’t think that’s what they mean by Let Go, and Let God.   😉

I kept consoling myself with thoughts like, “It’s not the clean dishes that matter,” or  “My family just wants my presence,” and “They don’t mind  the ring around the toilet.”

But, I wasn’t fooling anyone.  So, I set out to get organized….again.

I have decided that the number one key to organization is self-discipline.

All the planners and calendars and binders and to-do lists in the world won’t do the organizing for me.  I have to do it.  I have to use the tools put in my hands…and stick with it.

The other realization that I had recently, while shopping the produce aisle at Walmart, is this:  If I want my family to join me on my quest, I have to model it.

Once they see me consistently keeping up with my household responsibilities, it will instill in them a sense of pride and ownership in this home.  They in turn, will want to take responsibility in maintaining a clean, organized home.

~I wrote those words almost a week ago.  Just returning to the simple task of keeping a to-do list has helped tremendously.  (And I get a natural high from crossing stuff off of the list.)

The biggest reward is the thanks and appreciation I get from my family.   They, after all, are my inspiration.

  3. I totally agree. I have also found that once the discipline is established for one area, it becomes much easier to work on those other areas that need improving. Thanks for a great post!

  4. This is timely – I have just been realizing how messy rooms can get in a blink of an eye if you aren’t disciplined. Thanks for the pep-talk. I think I need to go clean something now. ~Mary

  1. […] I’ve said this before, but it bears repeating:  none of those tools will work without self-discipline, and a little organizational know how,  on our part. […]
