Last week we talked about How to Find Your Style. Today, I want to pick up where we left off to talk about where to go from there.
After gathering inspiration and taking note of the elements that stand out to you, it’s time to decorate. Yea, my favorite part!
Space
First, consider the room and how you use it.
While I would love to center the room around the fireplace mantel, that isn’t practical for our t.v. lovin’ family.
tip: In determining furniture placement, take into consideration the permanent fixtures in the space, such as cable and electrical outlets, walls and windows as well as traffic patterns.
Now you’re ready to place your furniture in the room.
Balance
Color and size both add weight. Spread color out evenly across the room, and distribute the scale of large pieces throughout your space. You will be able to judge visually if a room feels balanced or not.
Form and Function
Have you heard the expression, “form follows function?” These two elements go hand in hand. In my case, we have this piano that no one plays, but I’m not quite ready to get rid of it. So, it serves as a sofa table in the living room.
Texture
Once the stage is set, we’re ready for the fun part; accessorizing. This is your opportunity to bring in texture. Use elements that are soft, smooth, shiny, rough….
You can find these elements in mirrors, candles, blankets, pillows and home accents. Have fun with it.
Color
Don’t be afraid of color. The color of the year and other decorating trends are irrelevant if you don’t like them.
If you recall, I learned that I like a little splash of red when I took notes from my inspiration board. So, I incorporated this little red stool that I’ve had for years into my home decor.
Personality
But my number one tip is to bring in elements of personality. Use family photos, items of sentimental value or that tell a story, like this little bud vase in my foyer. It once displayed a rose bud on the church altar in honor of my daughter’s birth. That was 15 years ago.
A room doesn’t usually come together on the first try. If something doesn’t work, move it around until it does. I have spent many hours arranging a room, only to rearrange it again.
In fact, I recently redecorated my foyer, and I’m showing it off today at Mrs. Hines’ Class. I’d love for you to come see it.
A home that reflects your family and your lifestyle is good for the soul.
