I have a super-easy trick to share with you today: how to prevent glitter from falling off just about anything — from purses, to shoes, to decorations, to beauty product packaging!
It all began with this adorable little set of lip balms I received as a Christmas gift. I love lip balms, and this cute packaging plus the array of pretty colors and flavors had me oohing and aahing!
What I think I loved most of all? The glittered caps on each lip balm!
Until I realized that this was happening:
Glitter was coming off on my hands, and leaving little glitter trails in my purse.
And there was one more problem:
The glitter was also rubbing off and sticking to the actual lip balm. And “glittered lips” is not a look I’m going for, although back in the ’80s this would have been very cool!
Time for my super-easy solution to prevent glitter from falling off!
Sparkle Mod Podge!
Yes, Mod Podge comes in an awesome sparkle formula, with glitter embedded in it, which you can see above in my extreme close-up shot of my little paint brush.
Simply brush on two coats of Sparkle Mod Podge (let dry in between coats) and then let dry and cure for at least 24 hours. (I let mine cure for 48 to 72 hours before using, just to be extra sure!)
The Sparkle Mod Podge doesn’t dull the existing glitter at all while it seals the glitter in.
Everything still sparkles and shines!
And most importantly? This:
No more glitter on my hands, in my purse, or anywhere else except where I want it to be!
Aren’t these lip balms aDORable?
So. Try Sparkle Mod Podge to prevent glitter from falling off your things. It’s much easier to use than spray sealants!
Plus it has glitter in it! Win-Win!

Could I do this on my clothing that has glitter?
I have never tried this personally – so I can’t vouch for whether it truly works or not – but – the main suggestion I’ve seen over the years is to lay the garment flat and lightly spray it with unscented hairspray. I’m not sure how this would hold up long-term, of course depending if the glitter is a small decoration or a dress that is fully covered in glitter. If you try it, let us know!

Unfortunately these were a Christmas gift, and I don’t see any “brand name” on the packaging they came in. My guess is they were purchased at either a Sephora store or an Ulta store… just my guess! 🙂

hi, thanks for sharing. one thing, sparkle mod podge is not available in my country 🙁 can i just the normal glossy or matte finish mod podge?
Yes, I’d suggest using the glossy Mod Podge, if you don’t have the Sparkle Mod Podge available in your country. The glossy version will help retain the sparkle of the glitter and not “dull” it like the matte finish Mod Podge would. If I couldn’t find the Sparkle Mod Podge (my ultimate hands-down first choice), then I’d try the glossy version. Let me know if you try it and how it turns out for you!

thank for replying! i tried using the gloss mod podge as u recommended! it turned out great with the gloss finish. just glitter-fied my calculator cover 😛 btw, just asking, how much is the price of mod podge in ur country? I live in Singapore and it costs me S$20 (singapore dollars)! which is considered expensive for a glue.
Glad to hear your project turned out great! Yes, Mod Podge is a bit more expensive in your country than here in the US! Ours is a lot cheaper and can be found via Amazon and most online craft store websites, if you want to search around to see prices.

Just so you know, you can make your own mod podge by using one part white glue to one part water and mising it well. works perfect, and lot’s less expensive!
Hi, how durable is this method? Or long lasting? I’m thinking about glittering my otterbox and I’m just worried about sealing it.
I’ve not tried this on an Otterbox, but I can tell you that I use these lip balms EVERY day, as I have each one stashed in places where I need a lip balm, and no glitter has come off any of them! Mod Podge is very durable, and there’s even a “hard coat” version of Mod Podge that can be used for indoor/outdoor projects, so possibly try that one? If I was doing this, I’d use two or three coats of the Mod Podge to seal the Otterbox case well.

How would you apply this to purses and other surfaces that aren’t flat? Wouldn’t it ruin the fabric or purse?

I’ve not done this method on purses, however there are many people who have quite successfully, some using regular glitter and Mod Podge or using the Sparkle Mod Podge formulas. There are some great examples and tutorials on the Mod Podge Rocks blog in their “accessories” section. Hi, I was wondering if you are using glitter that is a bit bigger- a little more like sequins, and if I were to use the glossy mod podge do you think it would hold? My project is a mason jar that i’m decorating with glitter. It is glitter just a bit bigger than the microscopic kind, so it kind of sticks out. I got the idea from this: http://www.pinterest.com/pin/439312138625620229/ and that is the glitter/confetti I’ll be using. Do you think coating in mod podge will hold it? It seems to stick out a lot. I’m not sure if a sealer would be better. I’m just looking for the best way for it to stick and not fall off, any help would be appreciated. Thanks!!

Thanks for the awesome tip!! I’ve never seen glitter mod podge. I only have the glossy finish so could I just add equal halves of the mod podge and glitter and do layers on my project until I get the right glitteriness I’m looking for? Of course letting it dry in between layers cause it will take a few to get the right sparkle I’m wanting 😉
I’m making my nieces name in big wooden letters and then wanting to make them sparkle but don’t want the glitter to always fall off all over her room and make a mess! 😛
