Sunshine Pillow

I started finishing my mud room just shortly after we finished renovating our kitchen 8 years ago and have just made the finishing touches this summer. I decided to go with somewhat of a Sunshine theme in there since yellow is my favorite color and so cheery on the many gray days we experience here in Oregon. knew I wanted to post a quote somewhere in the room and thought that a pillow on the seating bench was the perfect way to do this. I found an old pillow that had seen better days lying around the house and cut out some muslin 1/2″ larger around the outside of it so that I had a seam allowance.

I kept thinking of a hymn we sing at church and knew it contained the perfect phrase for this project. I cut out a stencil using my cricut and applied it to the fabric using two different colors (as you can well see).

The ruffle was made with a bleached burlap I had on hand just tucked periodically as I sewed along the edge of the fabric. Burlap is not always the easiest to gather in the traditional way, so this method was much more to my liking.

Then I sewed the back on with right sides together…

and voila!

It has been the perfect addition to the seating area and makes my heart happy every time I walk through the room. This project was so easy to do and yet has had the perfect impact. Don’t you just love a quick project? Come check out how it looks in my mudroom this week on my blog at Shelstring.
